The First Glimpse

It was evening and the sun was setting on the horizon of the Aegean Sea making the horizon slightly pinkish in color. The beautiful fairy-tale like houses of Oia painted in pearl white were built on cliffs and the blue domes of the buildings complemented the warmth of the setting sun. People filled the narrow cobbled streets of the village, tourists and locals, all waiting for a beautiful sunset on Santorini.

In the audience there was a girl I later found out was named Elena, a lady with a dreamful soul and her mind seeking for something more than the mundane existence she had back in Athens. Despite this, she had come to Santorini without any plan because the stress that accompanied her job as a journalist was becoming unbearable. The beauty of the island had captivated her for a long time and she had to come and experience it for herself which she finally did and she felt at peace a feeling she had not felt in the past years.

She could only stand and cling to the stone wall and stare at the beauty before her when suddenly breeze moved through the air and she caught the smell of the sea and far off tune of a small guitar being strummed. Elena tried to listen the marvelous music, and feel the first warm breeze, the tension on her face was slowly replaced with a smile.

Upon regaining consciousness two men were standing a few steps away from her; one of them was looking at the sea in the distance. He was broad shouldered, wore his ruffled hair up and looked like one of those tourists that were abundant in that region. There was, Elena had to admit, something a little… intense about him that caught her eye.

He sudden turned to look at me as if he feels I am watching him, our eyes touched. For sometime, the sense of time slowed down. People around them disappeared as if the island was in the middle of no where, there was only her and him. This feeling which Elena was having was not something she could recall having experienced in the recent past.

The man looked at Him, and the corners of his mouth turned up in a small, heartfelt grin. It was one of those warm, friendly smiles and Elena had to smile back even though she had not fully decided to do so.

He moved closer and she felt him invading her personal space reducing the space between them. “What a stunning place,” I commented, to which he replied, “Yes, it is,” in the most melodious tone, similar to the sound coming from a seashell.

“Beautiful,” Addy echoed the words Elena said although she was surprised how softly the girl was speaking now. She believed she knew him, he gave her a warm feeling; yet at the same time she did not know him, yet felt uncomfortable around him.

minutes “Hi, I’m Adrian,” he said having shook my hand.

Elena,” she said and shook his hand firmly. The hand that reached for her was strong and warm , she shivered down to her toes when he touched her.

“First time in Santorini?” The man asked simultaneously; maintaining eye contact with her.

Elena nodded. “Yes I felt that I had to get away from it all and this place appeared to be the ideal retreat. ”

Adrian chuckled softly. “It does things to people Such is the mystery of this island that one cannot help but find mysterious isn’t it?”

Elena made the effort to relax her features into a pleasant, albeit somewhat homesick, smile, and found that she could look at the stranger in front of her without any feelings of discomfort. Interestingly, it brought out a remark from someone, “It feels like a dream. ”

They spoke for a while, touching on everything, from the island they were in and their lives, to the little things that made life beautiful. By the time they stopped to talk, Elena completely eased and could swear she’d known Adrian for more than the few minutes they had conversed together.

In the middle of the day dimming into dusk and with the raging sunlight gradually waning away and the world glowing in this warm, silvery light Adrian looked at Elena and his face registered the affection that was quite clearly shining in his eyes. Yong: “The above quote that says ‘The sunset is even more beautiful when you share it with someone’ is so powerfully true. ”

Elena felt something in her chest jumping at the mere sight of him. Valerie did not know what exactly in Adrian made her feel such a way but there was no doubt that there was something between them. They somehow wanted that feminine touch that the breeze had, the start of something they did not see coming.

Picking up a piece of chocolate cake on the neighboring plate, Elena didn’t immediately answer, but thought over the potentiality. It appears that she had arrived in Santorini for purposes of break from a busy life and in the process meet herself novel. Perhaps…had she not? Had she found something or someone altogether different and more desirable?

”I would like that,” she said, beaming.

Together they strolled down the narrow and curvy street of Oia the wind blowing softly, carrying the breath of a new day, a new start.

In that moment, she realized that this was just the start of a story, one that she would never forget; the story behind her, Alexey, and the wind.
