The Unlikely Meeting

Sophie Grant, readjusted her flowered scarf before strolling in the streets of Manhattan that was bustling with of activity. Her face felt stiff and her cheeks stung from cold wind; she walked faster – she wanted to get home. She just went from work, home, sleep and again work, with no duration of time being very distinct from the other. She agreed because that made it calculative, structured as well as secure. Some people found it boring to work alone, which is pretty much what she did as a freelance graphic designer living in a small, but comfortable apartment.

But that night, there was something strange. The city thrummed with electricity and excitement that made her chest thud as though the world was waiting for something great to take place. Despite this, she couldn’t completely cast off the sensation, and even as she stood before her apartment building, she struggled to fit the keys in the lock.

As she walked in, she saw a man standing near the mailboxes. He was a man of average build, wearing glasses with a black frame, dark hair that was neatly swept to one side, and a blurred jaw line that looked as if he were a model cut out of a magazine. He was dressed in a black well-tailored suit, and anyone who passed by couldn’t help but look at him several times.

Sophie rebelliously attempted to look the other way, but she glanced at him. He looked straight into her eyes as if he wanted to possess her body and soul or, should I say, devour her. She immediately averted her eyes, for she also felt a thrill that had no connection with the temperature.

She moved quickly toward the elevator so as to avoid him and the rather awkward incident. But as she was exiting the said places, she felt someone was following her, and as the doors shut, she turned around to see... The man had followed her in.

“Which floor?” she asked. Her voice was very soft, as if she were afraid of someone; she pushed the button on her own floor.

”Same as yours,” he said in a smooth tone. Sophie found him somewhat mysterious, which weakened her position as well as made her feel more excited.

Considering the fact that we were in the lift for what felt like a very long time,. Sophie was fully aware that his gaze was focused on her, and she could sense it in her bones. When they arrived, she waited for the doors to open and was out of the car in a flash, as if she could not stand to be in close proximity to him. But as she reached her door, he was still following her, making her feel tense and annoyed at the same time.

“Are you following me?” she asked harshly, fearing for her safety but trying hard to conceal it.

The man smiled, if one could call the movements of his facial muscles a smile rather than a sneer. “Well, not that I know, but apparently we ‘live’ next to each other. ”

Sophie frowned. She had occupied the building for more than two years and had not set her eyes on him. ”You’re right, I do not frequent this place; in fact, I have never been here before today. ”

Then he started agitating; he said, “I travel a lot of time for work,” and then he pulled out his keys. “Just moved in a few days ago. They only introduced me as Luca. ”

“Sophie,” she answered sadly and this time he used the key to open the door of the apartment that is adjacent to hers.

‘’Hello Sophie, it was lovely to meet you,” Luca replied. Although he felt that he was being courteous, he could not bring himself to be friendly towards them. “You have my number; if there’s anything I can do for you, don’t think twice of calling me. ”

She was caught off guard, and before she could say anything, he hastily went back into his apartment, shutting the door behind him and leaving Sophie standing in the hallway with the sound of his closing door bouncing in her chest. Still, she had many questions about her new neighbor, but a feeling in her deep inside told her that bumping into Luca would not be the end of her involvement in this story.

They strains and clicking sounds fading behind her as she shut the door to her and Simon’s room. She felt as if everything in her life was going to shift in some ways she never even dreamed was possible.
